We recently helped a client redesign the layout of her family room, kitchen and living/dining room. The client asked us only to assist her in the layout and elected to select all the finishes - cabinetry, countertop, appliances, faucets, etc. herself. This is a great option if you only need minimal design assistance from your interior designer. It allows you to save money if you have the time and inclination to do it yourself. We think she did a great job, what do you think?

New Kitchen

If you compare the original and revised floor plan, you'll notice that we demolished the wall between the kitchen and family room and relocated the wall between the kitchen and living/dining room.

BEDS AND HOW THEY CAN DEFINE A SPACE

Our beds, the place where we start and end our days. We don't always think too much about the bed that we sleep in as long as the mattress is comfortable. There are many styles to choose from these days.

One of my favourites is the upholstered bed. With all the hard surfaces in the bedroom like the dressers and night tables, it softens the space, adds a little bit of glamour and can be used in a contemporary or transitional room.

It's the time of year when we are all trying to dress up our homes to be festive and receive guests. Some people are wrapped up in traditions and look forward to decorating their homes to look the same every year. Some people look for something different to change things up every year.

You can change your colour theme and create huge impact. You can change your style from traditional to glamorous to rustic. I can appreciate each and every style and colour out there, however, I am drawn to the simple beauty of the use of greenery along with white in these settings. It doesn't take alot of time or money to decorate with fresh garland and it gives off a wonderful scent.

Hey Mom..Look what I can do!

When the ipad first came out, my husband tried to talk me into buying it but with two laptops and two desktops already in the house I didn't see the need for it. Luckily, we won one and I don't know now how I could have survived without it. I read the newspapers on it every morning, watch my favorite late night talk shows on it, use it to program my PVR, etc.

Recently, my eleven year old opened up the Draw Free app and in less than 2 minutes created a new Blue Lime Design logo. Remember when we had to learn to program our IBM computers using BASIC!?!

A Warm Welcome

With the cold weather quickly approaching I found myself wanting to make some changes in my home. One of the things at the top of my list was to create a warmer welcome in my foyer. My foyer was bright and cheerful but I guess after having it that way for a number of years I needed a change.

So I started with repainting the walls. I went from bright and cheery yellow to sophisticated gray. I selected Benjamin Moore OC-140 Morning Dew. This looks light in the daytime and a deeper, richer gray tone in the evening. While I was painting I also decided to paint out the spindles on the staircase OC-130 Cloud White. One hundred and forty eight spindles later, what was I thinking??????

I then purchased a hall chest to add storage and visual weight to anchor the mirror. The mirror frame was repainted in a burnished bronze to compliment the light fixture. The bench was repositioned to visually expand the space.

Relocating artwork around my home and adding a few new accessories like toss cushions, throw, vase, hurricane vase with candle and silver dish complete the look.

What Do We Do With That Area?

Sometimes there are small quirky areas in our homes that we just don't know what to do with. We are often asked about "display" areas along staircases. Recently, we had a client with a curved staircase beside a straight wall. Due to this configuration, there were two triangular shaped platforms along the wall. The builder had installed carpeting on it thus essentially treating it as flooring

We recommended that our client treat these platforms as built-in shelves instead. We had the carpetting removed and installed a mdf shelf painted the same colour as the trim. We then accessorized the shelves using large items rather then many small ones. On one shelf, we selected a collection of various sized vases. The deep turquoise colour of the largest vase grounds the trio while the simplicity of the clearer vases keeps the space somewhat neutral. The turquoise vase also carries the colour of the painting on the opposite wall. On the second shelf we elected to go with one larger and visually heavier item to balance the three items on the opposite shelf. The wooden lantern offers a more rustic juxtaposition to the glass. A soft silhouette blind and a new light fixture completed the space.

Are you Decluttering to Move or to Stay?... By guest blogger Lesley Ann Smith

Deciding the reason behind your decluttering is important because the objectives change depending on your reasons.

Decluttering to Move

If your short term plan is to get your home ready for sale then the decluttering should be focused on the following objectives:

1) Clear up floor space. Put yourself in the Buyers shoes. Will they understand why you have stacks of books or boxes in the corners? To them it will create alarms saying “not enough storage space”. This might very well be the reason for moving, the trick is to not be obvious about it.

2) Take yourself out of your home. I know you have spent years making the house you bought your ‘home’. Again think ‘buyers shoes’, buyers have a difficult time seeing past your memories. They can get lost in your pictures, and mementos.

3) Think Traffic Flow. Walk through your house as if it’s the first time in your home. Do you have to walk around any furniture, do rooms flow into each other. The better the flow the better the impression for buyers.

Decluttering to Stay

If your goal is to ‘reclaim your space’ then above might not work because you still want to live in your home, instead focus on these objectives:

1) Clear up floor space. Ok so this one is the same but for very different reasons. Moving stuff off the floor and into useful storage solutions will create rooms that are open and welcoming.

2) Think Traffic Flow. Pay close attention to how you live in your home. Are you having to manoeuvre around furniture to get from room to room. This can become annoying. If possible look for alternatives where walking around is not necessary, you will feel better about the space. It will open it up and you will be a happier home owner.

3) Think Item Flow. This is the same as #2 but for items. Based on how you live is everything where you need it. While in the kitchen for instance do you have everything you need at arms reach, within the 4-6 foot triangle? (Just a note, a comfortable work triangle should have no more than a 20 foot perimeter) Move from room to room paying close attention to how you live in it. Find storage solutions to accommodate how you live and not ‘what should be”. Changing how you perceive the space can help you live more effectively and ultimately happier.

Not that I want to stomp on your excitement to get down to work, just think about the reasons behind it first and what you want your goal to be in the end. Thinking of this in advance will make your work faster and more effective. You will end up accomplishing what you set out to do and be able to enjoy the result afterwards. Happy Decluttering!

What is Feng Shui?

Pronunciation: "fung shway"
Translation: Wind & Water

Meaning: The art of harmonizing & balancing the flow of energies.

Feng Shui is not a recent New Age religion, mysterious sect of psychology or a branch of interior decorating. With roots in China dating back about 5,000 years it is an ancient science based on the movement of energy.

The words Feng Shui mean Wind and Water. Air and Water are naturally flowing energies, essential to our survival. Air and Water along with our spiritual essence, are part of the precious flowing universal energy. As a phrase, Feng Shui refers to the all encompassing flow of energy that activates the power within and surrounding everything. So Feng Shui is about FLOW.

Because everything is energetically connected, ebbing and flowing together, most Western practitioners believe using positive intention and intuition by opening our mind, heart and spirit to changes that are felt by us, and those around us assists the scientific principles of Feng Shui. The purpose of modern Feng Shui is to find the best environmental arrangement for people to live and work up to their fullest potential ~ physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. With the proper application of the main tools of Feng Shui including: the Bagua Map, Yin & Yang and the Five Elements we can improve our personal magnetism; elevate our effectiveness; increase our ability to attract wealth, as well as enhance health and relationships.

The Bagua Map

Pronunciation: "baa gwa"
Translation: eight areas

The Bagua Map is a very effective Feng Shui device, which produces extremely accurate results. Traditionally octagon shaped with eight sections surrounding a central area, Western Feng Shui has evolved the Bagua to a square or rectangle divided into nine equal parts: eight areas surrounding a centre section. Each area or Gua relates to the design and structure of our home. The Bagua Map charts our environment, indicating whether our assets and blessings are being energized or dwindling.

Yin & Yang

Pronunciation: 'yin, yang' (as in English)

Meaning: These words used together represent the balance of opposites.

It is natural that we feel most comfortable in energetically harmonious surroundings. With Feng Shui we assess extremes, then Yin & Yang is adjusted so it is appropriate to each area of our environment; perhaps a bit more Yin in the bedroom and a little more Yang in the office, so we achieve balance and harmony in our lives.

The Five Elements

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water or The Five Elements, are considered to be the foundation of everything on earth. They are found everywhere around us, so it is only natural that we are most comfortable surrounded by an equal balance of all five.
The Five Elements can be represented by colour, shape or the actual element itself. Any balanced combination can be used. Comfort is key.

What's In a Name?

Have you ever glanced through a paint chip book and wonder who gets the great job of naming these colors? Foggy Morning, Indian Summer, Warm Brownie. Fun, easy...How do I get that job?

A few years back, we had the opportunity of coming up with a name for our company. How hard could it be, right? Well, what we thought would take us hours became weeks of throwing potential names back and forth. We had to consider what image and feeling we wanted to evoke with our name. Finally, we established that we wanted our company colors to be blue and green and we wanted our name to imply that our designs were "fresh". We started thinking about citrus fruits. Lemons, limes, oranges and finally it came to us....Blue Lime Design Inc.

With the help of Jill Monsod, a very talented graphic designer, we were able to settle on a logo and the rest is and/or will be history. So maybe that paint naming job isn't so easy after all....

Summer in Bar Harbor, Maine

In July, we set off for a road trip to Bar Harbor in Maine. The drive was long but the scenery was spectacular. The weather was surprisingly cool which was a welcome relief after departing from the heat wave in Toronto.

As usual, I kept an eye on the homes we encountered along the way, the most popular house color? Yellow.

This charming house on the water was the local library.

One of the highlights of our trip was sampling the local lobster at the Lobster Pound. My 9 year old ate a 2 lb lobster!

What is it about summer that makes for loads of inspiration and yet very little actual painting, at least for Yours Truly?

I've been having fun, doing lots of things that I love and expressing myself creatively without actually lifting a paint brush. I've been lifting a shovel instead and my canvas is my garden. My backyard is turning into an oasis, a sanctuary; a place of rest and renewal.

I'm one of those outdoor types who jumps out of bed in the morning and goes for a run or a bike ride and whenever possible squeezes in a canoe trip. I get fired up and full of ideas to paint and then come home and play in my garden instead. Have you ever visited the homes of artists and noticed the way their creativity spills over into their yards? So many colourful plants and pathways, water features and sculptures! Many times I have started out planning to paint, but the sunshine, gentle breeze and bird song have beckoned and my garden has seduced me again. Since attending the 5th International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, MA in June I've been arranging with my galleries to show some of my work later this summer and this fall. Otherwise, I am enjoying artist dates to galleries to see the work of other artists. Recently I visited the Art Gallery of Ontario and also attended the Toronto Outdoor Art Expo. As well I met with another Canadian encaustic artist whom I met at the conference last month. As expected I came home all fired up and ready to paint but eager to enjoy my garden too. Let's see what wins, the paint brush or the shovel. Hmmm.....

I just realized that I have a solution. I’ll do some plein air work with my great new cold encaustic paints that I purchased at the conference last month. Now I can be in my garden and still work with wax. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention.

Vietnam Travels

I recently had the opportunity to visit my home country of Vietnam and was so impressed by the country's diversity. We travelled from North to South Vietnam and encountered weather ranging from cold, rainy and foggy to sunny, hot and humid. Similarly, the architecture ranged from Chinese to French inspired, with a little Russian thrown in. We were enamored with the friendliness of the people, the exotic food and the gorgeous mountains and lakes. We can't wait to return!

MORE THAN JUST WALLPAPER

We wrote a few months about new design trends for 2011. One of those is the resurgence of wallpaper. We understand that many people have spent a lot of time removing old photo murals, chintzy flowery paper and painting over dated stencils. However, wallpaper has made a strong comeback in the last little while. Along with that, removable decals, wall tattoos (new type of stenciling) and photo murals have also become really popular.

More and more people are using removable decals for children’s room as the fun designs are easy to install and can be removed without any fuss. You can place them randomly and just have fun with it. No two walls have to look the same! You can create lots of impact with minimal work and time. This impact can also take the place of art and as most decals are reasonably priced, you are not married to it for a long period of time. You can change them up with the seasons or on a whim.

If you love to travel and to have your dream destination displayed in your home, why not consider a photo mural. They have come back stronger and better than before. You can take one of your own digital photographs and transfer it to a peel-and-stick mural which can be installed yourself in minutes. Or you can express yourself with an impactful abstract design that is purposely larger than life to create that "wow" factor in your home. Older versions were focused on realism, the idea of looking out a window to a realistic scene. But now, you can chose from many fantastical designs.

Stenciling is also making a big comeback in the form of “wall tattoos”. Smaller repetitive designs have been replaced with larger, bolder creations which look great just as a single item on your wall. They can be monochromatic or as colourful as you like. Art for Art Sake

There is one thing that we designers have noticed time and time again. Some people hang their art too high and in the most unbalanced groupings.

Regardless of your ceiling height, there is always a good rule of thumb when it comes to hanging art. Your eye level should be at the middle of the picture. If the adult members of your household vary greatly in height, take the median height and use that as your reference point. Also hang your art in relation to furniture size and location. You wouldn’t want to hang a tiny frame above a large sofa as it needs to anchor the piece as this one does below.

An effective way to create impact with small pictures is to hang them vertically, one above another.

Kitchen Dreams

I equate buying a kitchen to purchasing a luxury vehicle. It’s hard to know where to begin. There are usually plenty of people willing to offer advice and opinions. And when you get to the stage of looking at brochures, your choices and options seem endless. Door styles and countertops are really the least of your worries when there are so many other considerations that are more pressing.
If you are replacing an existing kitchen, think first about the layout and decide if it works well for you and your family. If it does work well, then you are already well ahead of the game. Then your next step is to look at the myriad of internal fittings and finishes. Spend some time considering the hardware as that is the jewellery for your kitchen. Perhaps you would like to replace your faucets as well. Ensure that all of your choices are cohesive and relate well with your door style and the rest of your home. Most kitchens these days are quite open to the rest of your home, so adjacent rooms should be major considerations.

If you are looking to change your current kitchen layout, then your process will be much more involved and challenging. These days, kitchens are the hub of the home and cooking is no longer the sole function. Most people prefer to have an eat-in area, an office space for bill paying, a television, a place for the kids to do their homework and a functioning party space where you might also want a permanent bar area with a wine fridge. Also important is an area for a pantry and utility items like vacuums, mops etc.

There are standard layouts for a kitchen: galley style, peninsula shaped and those with islands. Cabinet layouts can be “C” shaped, “U” shaped or in a straight line. Which is the right one for you? Unless you have a very large space allocated for your kitchen, most designers will avoid peninsula shaped cabinet configurations. This shape usually takes up a lot of space and your work triangle becomes too far apart to be practical. Galley kitchens may not be popular, but they can offer a lot of cabinet and countertop area for a small space. The intimate setting makes for very efficient use. Most people seem to prefer a large island whether your wall cabinets are in a straight line or on 2 right angled walls. Islands offer a lot of social benefits and those who choose to have sinks on them, can feel a part of the conversation. But be very honest with yourself. If you are not the tidy type, I would opt for the sink to be located behind the island.

The most important advice to offer is that regardless of your budget and size of room, plan your new kitchen realistically according to the way you live TODAY, and not the way you WISH you live.

Creative Space

An editor of a popular home and décor magazine remarked recently about a recurring dream of hers. She would walk through her house and discover a door she hadn’t seen before. Through that door led to an unknown room. She would be elated at the discovery of this extra space. I too have had this dream from time to time. I remember the thrill of finding more square footage within my house. I’m certain that dream analysts would have deep and meaningful explanations for these images. However, at face vallue, who hasn’t wished for more space? On the other hand, perhaps we aren’t truly in need of more space but simply better space solutions!

Think about your existing space. Can it be repurposed in a more useful way? Can this be achieved with minor construction, minor destruction or with simple allocation? Here are some examples.

Something as simple as closet organizers can gain you a lot of linear space with multi-level rods and shelving for clothes storage.

STYLING A BOOKCASE

We all love the idea of having a large bookcase in order to display our beloved collections of books and knick knacks. Unfortunately, before we know it, our bookcase is overflowing with an abundance of stuff. I'm sure many of you can relate to the picture below of a bookcase that likely represents one you have in your own home.

To tackle the task of styling your bookcase we can break it down into a few easy steps.

1. Take everything off the bookshelf. Here is your chance to clean the shelves and also do any necessary touch ups to ensure the bookcase looks clean and fresh. You may even want to paint it all out to really make a change.

2. Purge! We asked this client to eliminate at least half the number of books.

3. Display your books in a variety of ways. We suggest you plan out which shelves you want to place books on first and begin to place the books accordingly. Do not place books on every shelf.

The Plan

Books can be displayed vertically, stacked horizontally, placed in the middle with bookends or placed on their sides. Take a look at some of the examples we used. Also, consider the colours of the spines when grouping books.

4. Now it's time to fill in a little more of the space. Use a variety of items such as framed photos, sculptures, bowls, and anything of great interest or sentimental value. Keep in mind the colour and scale of the objects. Photo frames should have a common element, like colour. Different styles can easily be grouped if they are the same colour. Take a look around your home as some items you have may work better in this new space. Do not attempt to put all your items back on the shelves.

5. Stand back and have a look at the bookshelf as you are working on it. You may be changing things around as you try to balance out the look as a whole. Eventually, you will get to a point where you achieve a more spacious look. You need to see some of the shelves to be able to appreciate the items you have on them. You will be surprised at how well you'll notice these items now.

6. Keep on top of it. If you get a new book that you would like to display, you need to purge something. Less is more!

The Aftermath - Part 4 of 4

When the dust settles and your house feels like a home again, take stock of all that has happened and pat yourselves on the back for surviving the experience. Slowly but surely, start a list of items that are incomplete, not to your satisfaction or even forgotten. Make your list very detailed and don’t worry about its length. Now is when that 10% hold back money will come into play. Have a meeting with your Contractor and present your list. You may be faced with some resistance, but ensure him/her that your items are part of the confirmed scope of work and stay firm about holding the last payment. Point out any areas that were damaged by the construction, that should be the responsibility of the builder and the crew.

Clean-up might seem daunting but that is the final hurdle to cross in your home renovation process. Think about having some items deep-cleaned and your ducts cleared out of debris and dust. These tasks can be costly, so try to remember to include these in your final budget.

Keep track of all warranties on labour and products you have purchased along the way. Remember that only certified installations of items are valid. Check the fine print of all warranties for restrictions and ineligibilities.

We hope that by the end of this stage, you can enjoy the fruits of your efforts. There is no such thing as a seamless renovation. It's a rite of passage for some homeowners. Be proud of yourself. And pay it forward by passing on your knowledge to others considering this type of experience.

Let the Fun Begin! - Part 3 of 4

Now that all the planning is done, let’s spring into action. Will you live through the renovation or move out? That of course depends on the scope of your project. If you decide to move out, you'll need to include off-site living expenses into your budget. Regardless of whether you stay or go, remember that construction is messier and more invasive than you might think. Remove and store away soft items like curtains, rugs and cushions. Cover up your furniture with drop cloths and protect all your floors with proper coverings available at your local build-it store.

Ensure that you are physically present for at least the first few days of the project. There will be many decisions to be made on the spot as demolition begins and site conditions may dictate changes to your project. Being a phone call away may not be enough unless you have an Interior Designer available to make decisions for you. The faster the problems are dealt with, the smoother the process and the better the end result.

If you don't have an Interior Designer, plan to spend a lot of time picking out new hardware, fixtures, finishes, cabinetry, etc. With partial renovations, stay true to the style and age of the existing areas of your home. That will ensure visual continuity. Don’t get too caught up with things like paint colours as that can be one of your last decisions.

One item we highly recommend you purchase is a shop vac. Daily or even hourly clean-up will be so much easier with one. Do not use your home vacuum cleaner as that will ensure its quick demise. You may also need to rent a large bin for waste disposal. If you are renovating your kitchen, have a make-shift eatery set up in another room. This will allow you to to make small meals for yourself and your family and save money on take-out!

The day to day action will at times be slow and frustrating but always keep the big picture in mind. Open and honest communication with your Contractor and Designer is key to getting the job done right.

Planning and Studying - Part 2 of 4

Start a binder. Become a quick study. Learn as much as you can. Attend any upcoming home shows in your area. There you will find many sources for labour, building techniques, finishes and other helpful ideas. Another fun way to research your project is to attend open houses in your neighbourhood. We spoke about this in a previous blog. Seeing what your neighbours have done is a great way to see what can be possible for your home. You can get some great ideas from others who have done a renovation successfully. Your local government office is also a great place to get helpful ideas and even some tax credit benefit options. The more research you do, the better equipped you will be to tackle a home renovation.

So how do you choose the right contractor/builder for the job? This is a tough decision. We do not recommend that you rely solely on the lists of references provided by the contractors. After all, they will only give you the names of those whom they believe will say nice things. Start your research by asking your family, friends, neighbours, coworkers if they have had any work done and were they happy with not only the finished products but the process as well. Once you’ve narrowed your search to a few candidates, ask for detailed quotations. This process could take a couple of weeks to get firmed up. In the end, chose the company that has the most amount of experience in your scope of work, don’t choose the cheapest quotation and go by your gut feeling. Ask for lots of advice from those you know who have been through this before. Apply the same principles when searching for the right Interior designer for your project.

Regardless of the size of your endeavour, please remember to have everything in writing and have a building permit showing prominently in your front window.

Remember to hold back at least 10% of the total contractor's fee until the very end. There will be a list of deficiencies to deal with and that money held back will become a powerful tool in getting everything done/repaired to your satisfaction.

Some items will need to be ordered many weeks or months in advance. Consider this in your overall scheduling.

Dream Home - Part 1 of 4

We have prepared a 4 part series covering all aspects of a home renovation. We hope that you will find it very useful. When it comes to home renovations, a little preparation and consideration can go a long way.

February might seem like a strange month to start thinking about a home renovation but it is actually the perfect month to begin the planning process. By the time you finalize the scope of work, hire all your trades and prepare your home for construction, it will be springtime which is a great time for construction. Start with a wish list. Make it as big and fantastic as you like. Then you should come up with a budget, which is the maximum amount of money you feel comfortable spending. This dollar figure should be comprised in this way:

Budget = Renovation Cost + 15% Contingency + Interior Design Fee

This number should be presented to any and all prospective contractors during the interview process. At which time, they will be able to advise you on the number of items on your list that can be completed within your budget. This may mean that your wish list may need to be altered.

Your final renovation cost should also include the hiring of an Interior Designer. Although hiring an interior designer may seem expensive, they can suggest a lot of inexpensive design ideas, which can be appropriate for your overall budget.

Interior designers play an essential role in building or modifying any interior space. They consider how you use your space and design it accordingly. They map out the space required for each activity, create a lighting plan, select the colors for the rooms, decide the furniture to be used, create focal points, etc. In short, an Interior Designer uses creative and technical solutions to create an interior environment that is suitable for you and your family. An Interior Designer's services is invaluable for keeping you on track and being able to decipher and address the myriad of ideas and concerns you may have.

EAST MEETS WEST

Here we are in the middle of January. By now the novelty of snow has worn off and it’s a good time of year to watch some great movies. In terms of home design inspiration, “Something’s Gotta Give” is arguably one of the very best. Regardless of people’s many style preferences, this Hamptons house has become a fan favourite. I love the interiors because of how they make me feel. It’s such a relaxing home full of comfortable chairs and its light-filled interiors feel so fresh. It’s not a perfectly coiffed house without a cushion out of place. It looks lived in and loved in. It’s the kind of house where you can easily picture yourself reading a good book and drifting off for an afternoon nap.

Another great house is from the movie “It’s Complicated”. This west coast Spanish style rambling ranch home is just as inspirational as the Hamptons house. It’s another family home with very comfortable and casual surroundings. Its kitchen is open and would be considered the opposite of stark or minimal. It has a more rustic feel but is as visually appealing as the other house.

One movie showcases an Eastern home and the other is set in the beautiful quiet of the West. Despite the fact that they are located at opposite ends of the country, we love both homes for the same reason – their friendly and comfortable interiors. So many home décor magazines advise us to keep things simple and avoid clutter. But these movie homes – which are real homes for some fortunate families – successfully show that it’s far better to live and enjoy our spaces rather than to just create scenes like a studio set, which has no depth or substance.

We like to approach new home trends in the same way we approach fashion. We keep our expensive pieces classic and neutral and change up our accessories for an easy and fresh update. Last year at this time, we were just getting revved up for a sizeable and intrusive home renovation. Suddenly, we were knee deep in construction materials. Dust was everywhere and for weeks, our main floor toilet sat near the kitchen table. The courier that just happened to come by a few times during this period kept joking about how convenient it was for us to eat and sit on the potty at the same time. Yes, he was hilarious!

One evening in the middle of it all, I looked out our front window and saw our neighbours across the street happily trimming their tree. I was feeling sorry for myself and envious that our turn wouldn’t be for a while yet. Fast forward to one year later and this time our house is quiet, dust-free and ready for holiday decorating.

I believe in the ‘less is more’ approach. We don’t need to beat people over the heads with holiday themes and ornaments. Christmas decorating should be an extension of one’s existing sense of style. Think of the “common areas” in your home, these are the areas which are normally seen by others. Focus on those areas first and consider continuity for rooms that flow into each other. Repeat certain themes or items, as you would normally do in your home decorating. Consider having focal points such as a mantle, tops of doorways or even a chandelier to embellish. For children’s rooms, let them do their own decorating. You could even give them small trees to decorate.

The overall idea is to be festive but not heavily laden with themes, whether it is at this time or throughout the year.

I was passing by a retail store yesterday and I saw their display window beautifully decorated for the holidays. I was instantly inspired to start my own Christmas decorating. It was time to get rid of the half dead Mums and ready the cast iron urns for some greenery, bows and lights.

Regardless of whether you have a centre hall plan with your front door set in the middle, or off to one side, consider embellishing with balance and coordination. Interior spaces are better with odd numbers of accessories, but with outdoor decorating, go with pairs to act like nutcrackers guarding each side of your front door, to welcome guests.

The ingredients for a successful outdoor arrangement is like a good salad – start with a beautiful and understated vessel, anchor with fresh greenery, add some secondary, complimentary elements then finish off with shiny accessories. The greenery can be a variety of evergreen branches, some spilling over the edges, some more upright. Then the secondary ingredients can be tall, spindly dogwood branches and some coloured balls or pinecones and then accessorize with sparkly lights. To further embellish, swag some cedar branch bows over your front door, hang a fresh wreath; finish off with more lights on your eaves, fences and bushes. Now you’re set and ready to welcome in the holiday season and so am I.

Saturday mornings are great for sleeping in, drinking multiple cups of coffee and leisurely reading the newspaper. I usually skip through most of the sections and focus in on the list of open houses in our neighbourhood. As some seasoned garage-salers would do, I circle the properties I find interesting and create an efficient driving route.

What do I like about open houses? I think that there is an innate desire in all of us to be curious. As a designer, I like to see how other people live in their spaces. Have you ever noticed how a house can turn you off as soon as you walk in the front door? It may be a smell (pets, last night's dinner), an overwhelming color or an overabundance of furniture. These days a lot goes into presenting a house for sale. There is an entourage of hired help to get the interiors looking like pages out of a magazine. Agents are no longer selling houses but lifestyles. As with home renovations, a talented Interior Designer is key in bringing it all together.

The Magic of Television

I find that a day isn’t complete if I haven’t had my dose of HGTV. I am an avid viewer of gardening, home renovation and Designer focused shows, as well as, shows that feature buying and selling of properties in North America and in the British Isles. I admit to be rather addicted to it all.

Kenneth Lowe was a radio executive with E.W. Scripps Company when he envisioned HGTV in 1992. Its first show aired in December of 1994. I would imagine that even Lowe could not foresee what a phenomenon this network would be in the years to come. The Canadian version of HGTV was launched in 1997. From its modest beginning, Lowe’s network has diversified to many others such as the DIY Network, Cooking Channel, Food Network and Great American Country.

After being an avid fan for so many years, I am starting to wonder if HGTV is giving the average homeowner a skewed perception of home improvement. Within 30 or 60 minutes, we see the magical transformations of rooms or even entire homes, as if they popped up overnight like a mushroom in a damp forest.

In reality, 30 minutes may be enough time to form a good shopping list for the next trip to a local build-it store but certainly not enough time for a room to be magically painted, tiled and furnished. In this world of instant gratification, we don’t want to be burdened with seeing the guts of a renovation. But that may be giving people the false impression that things can be done with a wiggle of a nose or a swish of a wand. It’s just the magic of television, talented designers and dozens of behind-the-scenes work crew and clever editing that produce the slick finished products broadcasted for our enjoyment.

I will always love HGTV and I am proud to say that the Canadian content is fantastic and it has set a very high standard.

New Orleans Architecture

I recently headed off to New Orleans soooooo excited to see the architecture and I wasn't let down! I couldn't stop snapping my camera. Here are some pictures of the homes and gardens that I took.

This first one was taken while I was on the St. Charles streetcar. Along St. Charles are many beautiful mansions and the cheapest way to see them is by streetcar, you can't beat this $1.25 tour!

On our way back from our streetcar tour, we stopped and wandered around the Garden District where I found both of these double gallery houses. The color scheme of both homes were so clean and fresh. Definitely two of my favorites.

In the French Quarter, the streets were filled with charming restaurants. Surprisingly, I learned that there are now more restaurants in New Orleans post-Katrina than pre-Katrina.

Within the French Quarter, we found many styles of homes. This Townhouse was found along a main street while the Shotgun style home below was found along the residential side streets. We found many of these Shotgun homes in the French quarter, all with intricate Victorian style detailing.

The homes in the French quarter had little, if any, frontage. However, hidden in the back of these homes are some pretty spectacular gardens. Here are two we were able to find hidden behind iron gates.

COOL NEW SHOWER DRAIN

I never thought I would get excited about a shower drain but, here I am anxiously awaiting my new bathroom project just so I can use this cool product.

The shower drain by ACO is not only functional but it is rather cool looking too. It comes in 7 different grill styles which also includes a style in which you can insert your corrresponding floor tile. It can be installed at the threshold or at the front or side of the shower. There is no longer a need to slope your tile from the four sides down towards the middle. Installation is easier than the traditional method and you can accomodate various locations for your drain.

The tile insert makes it very inconspicuous.
And you can also get it with LED lighting, various colours available.

Ceiling fans are now in style due to the push for a greener solution to staying cool. They help keep you cool in summer and also help push the heat down in winter. Perspective Drawings as a Design Tool

If you've ever tried to envision a space from a floor plan, you know how difficult it can be to imagine. We've always found that clients have difficulty visualizing our designs and will often use perspective drawings to convey our vision.

Although time consuming, whether by hand or with the assistance of a computer program, the ability to show a client exactly what their room will look like is immensely beneficial.

For the DIY designer, there are now free and low priced versions of the professional programs used by Designers and Architects available on the market. You can create your own perspective drawings using programs such as Google Sketchup and Home Design Software by Chief Architect.

FIREPLACE FACADES

Fireplaces are a great focal point but only if they are well done. We've all seen the 1980's red brick monstrocities that have taken over our family rooms. You can save this room using some of the ideas we have used over the past few years. Converting your wood burning fireplace to a gas fireplace is becoming more common as most people no longer want to deal with the mess and it is more energy efficient. Also, without wood burning, the large raised hearth can now be eliminated. A variety of materials can be used to reface your fireplace.

Stone veneer is a popular option now. Although the fireplace opening is small, the fireplace looks large and adding the window seats and shelves on each side makes this a complete focal wall which now balances the large room.

This small room was dominated by a large red brick fireplace. By drywalling over the brick and adding a cast limestone mantle the fireplace is given presence but is now more proportional to the small room.

Play up the drama of a high ceiling without the cathedral church altar effect. We used wood to cover the brick and we also decided to do a grid pattern on the walls to complement the fireplace and balance the height.

Sometimes all you have is a flat wall. We dressed this up by putting the stone veneer on the wall and added a large cast stone mantle. Once again, we have created a full focal wall.
